Our History

For over 100 years, Whirlpool has stayed ahead of the field by offering innovative solutions for fabric care, food preservation and food preparation. From the launch of the first electric wringer washing machine in 1911, produced in Michigan USA by Upton family, through a combination of constant growth and strategic acquisitions during the century, Whirlpool Corporation has expanded globally becoming a world's leader manufacturer of major home appliances, selling and producing home appliances all around the world.

2012: The Whirlpool brand’s iXeliumTM cooktop won the prestigious iF Gold Design Award, and two design concepts, Fireplace and FreshConnect, also won iF Product Design awards. The iF Product Design Award is an important international competition that covers all areas of product design and serves as a platform for design-related innovations.

In 2009, Whirlpool Corporation announced its commitment to make all electronically-controlled appliances it produces – everywhere in the world – smart grid compatible by 2015.

In 2003, we became the world’s first appliance manufacturer to announce a global greenhouse gas reduction target, a 3 percent reduction from 1998 levels by 2008. We revised the target in 2007, to a goal of 6.6 percent reduction by 2012. Currently our operations’ release of toxic chemicals in the United States is nearly 90 percent less than the releases compared to the 1987 baseline year, while at the same time production increased approximately 80 percent.

In 2006, Whirlpool Corporation acquired Maytag Corporation, thus extending its existing position as the world's leading manufacturer and marketer of major home appliances to a company with annual sales of more than $19 billion, more than 80,000 employees, and over 60 manufacturing and technology research centres around the world.

Whirlpool Europe opens new cooking factory on its Wroclaw, Poland, manufacturing site, producing built-in hobs and ovens under the company's entire portfolio of European brands, to be distributed across all markets in Europe. The site is also home to a dishwasher factory and a refrigeration factory, a centre of technological excellence and rapid prototyping, and a chemical waste-water treatment plant.

Whirlpool Europe becomes Premier Sponsor of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) European tour. The company also announces the extension of its collaboration with Habitat for Humanity in Europe, and creates a milestone three-way partnership, whereby Amélie Mauresmo represents the WTA as official ambassador for Habitat for Humanity in Europe.

Guido Borghi and his three sons found the Ignis company and brand in Comerio, Italy, later to be acquired by Philips in 1972 and then by Whirlpool Corporation in 1989.

Gottlob Bauknecht starts small electric workshop in Taillfingen, Germany, eventually establishing his first factory in 1933. Philips acquires Bauknecht business in 1982.

Upton Machine Corporation is founded in St. Joseph, Michigan, to produce electric motor-driven wringer washers. Subsequently merges with the Nineteen Hundred Washer Co. in 1929
